About: Chainsaw Courses

These courses are designed to develop chainsaw operators who can safely demonstrate and apply industry best practice in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice for Chainsaw Use. 

Ideal for occasional users and those new to workplace chainsaw operation. Training can be tailored to incorporate specific company policies and procedures where required.

This is an introductory-level course focused on safe and practical chainsaw use in workplace and domestic environments. It does not cover advanced techniques such as tree felling, steep or hill terrain work, or advanced forestry operations. 

This course is suitable for: 

  • Contractors and workers required to use a chainsaw in the workplace  

  • Farm and forestry workers  

  • Lifestyle block owners and landowners  

  • Businesses needing staff trained in safe chainsaw operation  

  • Occasional chainsaw users requiring formal training  

  • Individuals wanting practical, safety-focused training with Unit Standards or (without NZQA assessment 1-day option)

Participants will learn to: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of chainsaw safety rules and legislation  

  • Describe requirements for transporting and handling chainsaw fuel  

  • Identify and manage kickback risks  

  • Describe PPE and first aid requirements  

  • Identify hazards that influence chainsaw operation  

  • Explain how a chainsaw functions  

  • Check a chainsaw and its components  

  • Perform basic maintenance, including sharpening and bar care  

  • Prepare a chainsaw for operation  

  • Start and test a chainsaw safely  

  • Use a chainsaw to perform cutting tasks  

  • Understand tension and compression in timber  

 

Skills Covered 

Training includes both theory and practical components aligned with industry best practice: 

  • Legal requirements for chainsaw operation  

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)  

  • Chainsaw maintenance and care  

  • Pre-start safety checks  

  • Safe starting procedures  

  • Correct cutting techniques  

 

Training Delivery 

Training is delivered through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical sessions to ensure competency. 

Entry Requirements 

  • Participants must have a reasonable level of physical fitness  

  • Minimum age: 15 years  

  • Must have English language competency equivalent to: NCEA Level 1 (Year 11), or IELTS 5.5 or higher. Note: If this requirement is not met, a reader/writer must be provided (not another participant). 

 

Identification Requirement 

Participants must bring a valid photo ID on the day of training. This is required to verify identity for attendance and assessment purposes. 

Training Locations & Requirements 

Training can be conducted at our North Canterbury site, at your location, or at your worksite and tailored to suit your organisation’s specific requirements.

 

For on-site delivery, an appropriate open space and suitable cutting material must be provided. Get A Grip Training Solutions supplies all the required chainsaw equipment, and participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment where possible (all equipment must be compliant with safety standards). 

Courses Offered

2-Day Unit Standards Course 

Price: $695.00 + GST per person 

NZQA Unit Standards  

Unit Standard 6916: (Level 2, 5 Credits) 

Demonstrate knowledge of the rules relating to chainsaw use 

Covers: 

  • Rules for chainsaw use  

  • Transport and handling of fuel  

  • PPE and first aid requirements  

 

Unit Standard 6917: (Level 2, 10 Credits) 

Demonstrate basic chainsaw operation in a non-forestry production environment 

Covers: 

  • Chainsaw components and functions  

  • Factors influencing safe operation  

  • Preparation, starting, and testing  

  • Safe cutting techniques  

 

1-Day Competency Course (Assessed to Unit Standard Level) 

Designed for individuals who do not require NZQA Unit Standards but still need to demonstrate competency to the same standard. 
Duration: 1 Day 
Price: $450.00 + GST per person 

Refresher Training 

Due to the high-risk nature of chainsaw operation, refresher training is recommended as best practice. 

  • General recommendation: Every 2–3 years  

  • Refresher Course Duration: 1 Day  

  • Price: $330.00 + GST per person  

  • Minimum: 4 participants (Note these trainees may be added to the 2nd Day of a Unit standard Course to make up numbers  

  • Maximum: 10 participants  

Unit Standards are not awarded for refresher training.

  • Maximum: 8 participants

 

1-Day Competency Course: 

  • Minimum: 4 participants  

  • Maximum: 8 participants
