Frequently Asked Questions

Who are Get A Grip Adventure Trips suitable for?
Our adventure trips are suitable for drivers with little to moderate off-road experience who want to explore New Zealand’s backcountry in a safe, guided environment. Some trips are more challenging than others—specific requirements will be outlined in each trip description.

Do I need prior 4WD experience?
No prior 4WD experience is required for some trips. Contact our team if you are unsure.

Our guides provide instruction, guidance, and support throughout the journey. More advanced trips may require previous experience, which will be clearly stated in the trip details.
For participants who would like to build confidence and skills before their adventure, we also offer Open Day public 4WD training courses. In addition, subject to availability, participants may book a dedicated training course prior to their trip at an additional cost. Completing training before your adventure will ensure you are better equipped, more confident, and ready to get the most out of your experience.

What type of vehicle do I need?
You must have a road-legal 4WD vehicle equipped with low-range gearing. Vehicle suitability, tyre requirements, and any additional equipment will be confirmed before departure. Suitable 4WD vehicles are available for hire at an additional cost. Contact our team for more information.

Are my tyres suitable?
Tyres must be in good condition with adequate tread remaining and no sidewall or structural damage. All-Terrain (AT) tyres are the minimum recommended standard. Low-profile or road-focused tyres are not suitable. If unsure, please contact us prior to booking.

Do I need special vehicle equipment?
Most standard 4WD vehicles are well suited to our trips. Basic recovery gear is recommended, but not essential. Your guides will be fully equipped should any recovery be required. A detailed vehicle preparation list will also be provided once your booking is confirmed.

Do I need a winch or snorkel?
No, winches and snorkels are not required for our adventure trips. Snorkels can be useful as additional protection in dusty or wet environments but are optional.

Is food provided on the trip?
Most trips are fully catered. This is clearly stated on the trip information page. We do have a trip that offers self-catering should this be your preference. Full catering details will be provided in your trip information pack.

What should I bring?
Packing requirements vary depending on the trip type (camping or luxury-supported). A comprehensive, trip-specific packing list will be sent once your deposit has been received.

Can passengers come along?
Yes, passengers are welcome on most trips at an additional cost, subject to seat availability and safety requirements. Please include passengers into your online booking or contact our team.

How many vehicles are on each trip?
Group sizes are kept manageable to ensure safety, minimal environmental impact, and a quality experience. Exact numbers will vary by trip.

How do we stay together as a group?
We travel in a guided convoy using a structured system, including radio communication and the Buddy Navigation System, to ensure no vehicles are left behind or miss turn-offs.

What happens if my vehicle breaks down?
Our guides are experienced in off-road vehicle management and recovery. While major repairs may not be possible in remote areas, assistance will be provided to ensure safety and coordination of next steps.

What if the weather is bad?
Trips run in most weather conditions. However, routes or itineraries may be adjusted if conditions are unsafe. Participant safety is always our priority.

Is smoking allowed?
No. All Get A Grip Adventure Trips are strictly non-smoking while vehicles are operating and during daily activities.

Is alcohol permitted?
Our guides operate under a no-alcohol policy while on tour. Guests are asked to consume alcohol responsibly and in line with driving laws and trip guidelines.

Are adventure trips suitable for children?
Some trips may be suitable for older children. Please contact us to discuss age requirements and suitability for specific trips.

Do you cater for dietary requirements?
Yes. Please advise us of any dietary requirements at the time of booking so we can accommodate where possible.

What happens after I book?
Once your deposit is received, you will be sent a detailed pre-trip information pack, including packing lists, vehicle requirements, meeting details, and final trip information.

Do you offer refunds?

All adventure trips require a non-refundable deposit at the time of booking. You are able to change trip dates free of charge (provided you book into the same trip).
