​This course is designed to ensure operators develop the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and efficient operation of a truck-mounted sideloader. Training focuses on real-world application and is ideally delivered in the workplace using operational equipment and site-specific conditions. For best practice, we recommend completing the Unit Standard initially, followed by competency-based refresher training every three years.

Training Delivery

Training is delivered through a combination of theory and hands-on practical assessment using workplace equipment to ensure competency.

 

Prerequisites

Must hold a current full driver licence appropriate to the class of vehicle being operated.

Participants are expected to have prior supervised experience operating a sideloader before attending this course to have sufficient practical ability to safely operate equipment.

Due to the practical nature of the training, delivery is best suited to the workplace.

 

Equipment & Site Requirements

The following must be supplied for training:

• One tractor unit fitted with a truck-mounted sideloader

• A truck and skeletal (“skelly”) trailer to receive a loaded container

• One container loaded to at least 50% of the sideloader’s safe working load

• Certified lifting chains (must have a current Certificate of Inspection)

• Skeletal or flat deck (if loading onto a truck)

• Cones and/or barriers to establish a safe training area

• Suitable training room for theory delivery

Unit Standard: 17679 (Level 3, 6 Credits). This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a sideloader in a workplace environment.

1-Day Competency Course

Designed for operators who do not require NZQA Unit Standards but still need to demonstrate safe and effective operational competency.

Refresher Training

Regular refresher training is recommended to maintain safe operating standards.

Duration: Half Day
